IMG_0975Teacher Appreciation Week Wrap-Up | This week May 2-6, our PTA community celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week and recognized our hard-working teachers and staff at Rogers!

PTA hosted a breakfast on Monday, which included coffee donated by Sheldrake’s Coffee (formerly Polly’s) on 2nd Street and cookies from Colossus Bakery (also on 2nd Street). On Wednesday, we hosted a lunch donated by George’s Greek Cafe, which is owned by one of our Rogers families. Today Friday, we will be hosting another lunch and will also present our teachers and staff with a small token of our appreciation.

Throughout the month of May, PTA will continue the celebration by stocking the Rogers  lounge refrigerator with drinks and provide snacks for our teachers and staff to say thank you for all they do!

A BIG and VERY special thank you to the many parents who assisted with setting up and serving the meals: Sarah Balusik, Shana Balladares, Laura Carson, Cara Murillo, Kavita Huerta, Jane Thompson, and Kelli Urbano.

We also want to recognize all the parents and others who donated food, drinks, snacks and serving utensils and plates… PTA couldn’t make ANY of this happen without you! PTA loves ALL of its teachers, staff, VIPS, and volunteers! THANK YOU!

open house text on sandwich board clip artSave the Date! Open House IN PERSON Wednesday May 18th 6-7 p.m. | Rogers is holding IN PERSON Open House later this month! Parents and students are welcome to come by during this event to visit classrooms, meet teachers, look at student work, and generally visit campus. This is a free-form event with no bell schedule, so make time to visit all of your child’s classrooms and spaces on campus that they spend time in daily. We hope you can make it!

Please note this is not a PTA event. Questions about Open House may be directed to the Rogers Front Office.

PTA General Association Meeting Tuesday 5/24/2022 at 6:30 p.m. IN PERSON AT ROGERS Please plan to attend the next Rogers General Association PTA Meeting later this month on campus at Rogers (exact location TBA). Please note this is the final meeting for the 2021-22 school year.

While EVERYONE is welcome and invited to attend this meeting, please note that only active 2021-22 Rogers PTA members are eligible to vote. Items to be discussed at this meeting include funding for the 2022-23 school year, end-of-year recognitions, 8th Grade events and activities, and so much more to wrap up the current year at Rogers. Principal Wood also is scheduled to address membership at this month’s meeting. We do hope you can come to learn more about what is happening at Rogers – bring a friend or two!

We hope we can count on your support, voice, and vote to help with these efforts! Out of respect for everyone’s time, PTA is going to start the meeting right at 6:30 p.m. and make it a goal to keep the scheduled agenda to one-hour. Thank you for your understanding.


Horse head shot clipart image w a mortar board graduation hat8th GRADE COMMITTEE UPDATES | Our committee visited CSULB last week, and we are excited for an amazing event with bowling, billiards, dancing, and more! Parents and students, please look for a flyer and permission slip in the next few weeks that will be sent home from the school. The next meeting will be on May 24th from 6-8pm (please email for the location).

The 8th Grade Committee Still Needs Your Support! The end-of-year party for all Rogers 8th Graders is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14th from 6-9 p.m. at the CSULB Student Union. Haven’t donated yet? We are looking for 20 more families to donate $25 by Monday May 15th! You can link to the donation portal specifically for 8th Grade events at the PTA store by using the link here. Let’s make it a night to remember for ALL of our 8th Grade students!

A BIG Thank You to the 50+ families who have donated so far to date! To clarify, please note that this celebration is not the promotion ceremony but a special, additional party being planned for our 8th grade students to have a last “hurrah” together as a class. A suggested donation of $25 per 8th Grade student is requested to cover the costs of the event for ALL 8th graders – DONATE TODAY

MBWA4064Rogers Music Fundraiser Festival Saturday May 21st, 4-7 p.m. | The Rogers Music Program will be holding its large annual fundraiser event outdoors at Rogers later this month! Tickets are just $25 to come and enjoy our Beginning, Intermediate, and Advance Band and Orchestral ensembles, along with food, games, opportunity drawings, and more! Buy a ticket, bring a lawn chair, and come enjoy Saturday afternoon in Rogers Park on 5/21, all while supporting the music program. Monies raised will go back into the program in the form of music equipment and instruments/ upkeep, supplemental teaching and coaching, field trip opportunities, and other enrichment. Silent auction opening online soon.

Rogers Middle School Teacher Appreciation Week starts NEXT WEEK May 2nd – 6th  With the support of our Rogers PTA and Student Council, we will be honoring our hard-working teachers and school staff with special meals and words of gratitude and support. Have your child keep an eye out for how they can participate the week after we return from spring break.

We are in need of parent volunteers to help set-up and serve breakfast and lunches for our teachers. Can’t make it during the week? Rogers SBAC Student Behavior Gift Card Incentive Program | Help Rogers Mustangs Succeed on the SBAC! Rogers students will be taking the SBAC exams starting May 3rd through approximately May 10th. This year, Rogers will be rewarding its students during the SBAC testing period through a series of prize drawings. All students who come to school on time and show great Mustang behavior during the SBAC testing period will be eligible.

Rogers is requesting donations for the drawing prizes; $5 and $10 gift cards or other items that you or your business are able to donate are welcome. Donations should be submitted to the Rogers Front Office by the end of today Friday, April 29th.

Great job Mustangs! We met our milestone of raising $30,000. Every student in the school was entered into a raffle to win tickets to Universal Studios. Congratulations to the winner!

We had lots and lots of winners!

  • The money vault was huge. Every winner grabbed more than $100. We gave away more than $1,000.
  • The classes that earned the most (per student) were: Hamilton, Hines, and Klements. Pizza party will be coming your way.
  • Three students won $100 Amazon gift cards and 300 students won $10 gift cards (In-N-Out, Starbucks, and Snow Monster).

Winners will be contacted next week with instructions on how to claim their prize.

A BIG THANK YOU AGAIN to our donors, volunteers, students, teachers, and staff for making this wonderful event possible for our school! WE APPRECIATE YOU!

ICYMI | Operation Easter Basket UPDATE | Thank you to everyone who donated items and helped put together the baskets for the local Operation Easter Basket drive. Through everyone’s efforts, Rogers was able to donate 75 completed baskets to the cause!

Mustang Drive UPDATES | The Mustang Drive Celebration is set for NEXT WEEK THURSDAY, APRIL 14TH (the day before Spring Break)!

We have five days left of our Mustang Drive. Please register and send donation requests via PledgeStar. The last day for donations is Wednesday, April 13th. If every student raises $67 we will meet our goal.

Our Mustang Drive Celebration takes place NEXT WEEK Thursday, April 14th.

Three things you need to know:

  1. We need volunteers* for our Mustang Drive Celebration on Thursday, April 14th. Please sign up here.
  2. Every student can participate in the Celebration activities and earn tickets to win prizes, but they need to have a signed permission slip turned in by Wednesday, April 13th.
  3. Event T-shirts will be on sale:
    • Online until 8pm, Saturday April 9th.
    And a limited number in person, at the following times, outside of the auditorium gate/Home ec room:
    • Tuesday, April 12th – After school from 3:40-4pm
    • Wednesday, April 13th  – Before school from 8am-9am and after school from 3:40-4pm

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2 to 6 2022 at Rogers. Rogers 8th Grade Party Flyer for fundraising for event date 6-14-20228th GRADE SUPPORT NEEDED! Meeting THIS MONDAY 4/4! The end-of-year party for all Rogers 8th Graders is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14th from 6-9 p.m. at the CSULB Student Union. Want to help with planning or just learn what’s happening for our 8th Graders in their last few months at Rogers? The next 8th Grade Committee Meeting is scheduled for THIS MONDAY April 4th 6:30-7:30pm via this ZOOM link (email Danielle Van Divort at deesteinberg@yahoo.com to RSVP and/or for additional info).

The 8th Grade Committee also needs your donations by THIS MONDAY April 4th to make it happen! A flyer went home to all 8th graders in February explaining the event along with how you can help to support the effort. This will be a glow-in-the-dark themed, parent-supervised event with a mac-and-cheese bar, tater tot bar, candy bar, live DJ, dancing, bowling, billiards, shuffleboard, air hockey, a photo booth, and MORE! Easter basket clip artOperation Easter Basket is on NOW through Friday April 8th! Rogers Middle School is joining forces with Justin Rudd to fill Easter baskets for children of families in need. This is Rogers’ 13th year participating in the event, and we are excited to make a difference in our community. We are collecting for ages 0-16. If you can help us spread some spring cheer, donations would be appreciated and can be dropped off at the main office NOW through one week from today, Friday April 8th as follows:

Hygiene Items | (Preferably full sized) soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, bubble bath,  toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, nail polish, nail file, hand sanitizer, hair accessories, face wash, razors, shaving cream, hair ties, loofa, diapers, baby shampoo, baby powder, baby bottles, and hair brushes.

New Toys | Cars, balls (all sports), small Lego sets, playing cards, yo-yos, slinky, Easter toys, jump ropes, small stuffed animals, and plastic baseball bat sets.

New School Supplies | Pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, box of crayons, markers, colored pencils, stamps with ink pads, crossword puzzles books, drawing pads, notebook paper, calculators, rulers, erasers, journals, chalk, pencil bag, highlighters, post-it notes, whiteout, glue, and paint sets.

Food | Sealed small sized candy, full sized candy bars, individually wrapped snack packs, and Pez candy holders and refills.

Parents or students, please consider nominating an outstanding Rogers teacher, one who implements creative and innovative ideas that enrich the learning experience of our Rogers students.

We are off and running! The Mustang Drive has begun!

Get your T-shirt: The last day to purchase a Mustang Drive T-shirt is THIS WEDNESDAY, March 30th by 4pm. Go to the  PTA web store right now to order yours! 

Be sure to sign up:  https://pledgestar.com/rogers/ . It all starts here. We need donations to reach our goal of $50,000 and qualify to raffle a MacBook.

Get the taste of sweet success: You can still qualify for an ice cream treat that will be delivered on MONDAY, March 28th. Be sure to send ten emails to family, friends, and relatives by TODAY 3/25. You have until midnight, but don’t wait until then.

Jeopardy 2021-22 Update Congratulations to Rogers 7th Grader Nate Ward, who won this year’s Rogers Jeopardy tournament at the school level! Nate is scheduled to compete in the LBUSD level tournament set for June 11th at Marshall Middle School.

Rogers Middle School PTA logo thumbnail social image b.wRogers PTA Elections Meeting IN PERSON THIS TUESDAY March 22nd at 6:30pm Elections for the 2022-23 Board are scheduled for the next General Association meeting, which will be held IN PERSON at Rogers in the former Home Rec Room (where PE Uniform/Rogers Sweatshirt sales happened at the beginning of the year; please enter from the door off of Monrovia).

We are so excited to be able to welcome everyone back to campus for this first in-person PTA meeting since January 2020! We hope you can make it! All are welcome… and please bring a friend! WE NEED A QUORUM TO BE ABLE TO HOLD OUR ELECTIONS. All Rogers PTA members who have joined by February 22nd are also eligible to vote in the elections. More information regarding the elections is posted in the March 11th issue of the PTA News.

In addition to our annual elections, PTA will be honoring the top three student finishers of the Jeopardy Tournament and also recognize the Reflections contest participants, and we will also be approving our mid-year audit and monthly financials and getting updates (and approving contracts) related to the Mustang Drive and 8th Grade Event. Principal Wood will also provide updates on what is happening at Rogers as well.

So much fun happening, Mustangs… We hope to see you Tuesday!

Mustang Drive kicks off THIS MONDAY, March 21st! This is our most important fundraiser of the year and supports enrichment programs, field trips, student programs, and teacher wish lists. At the kick-off, students will get information on how to sign up and the prizes they can win!

How can parents help? 

  • Sign up: https://pledgestar.com/rogers/
  • Add family and friends to send donation requests by email or text.
  • Post a donation request on social media, especially Facebook, using the option appearing after adding your donors. This has been proven to be very effective!
  • Purchase a Mustang Drive T-shirt at the PTA web store

We are looking for T-shirt sponsors! T-shirts are very popular among students since they can wear them year-round. Your logo will be on the back of the T-shirt, providing you with excellent exposure. Your business will be appreciated and seen by Rogers families and the community throughout the school year and into the following. A limited number of spots are available! You can purchase a sponsorship at the PTA web store.

Rogers 8th Grade Party Flyer for fundraising for event date 6-14-20228th GRADE SUPPORT NEEDED! The end-of-year party for all Rogers 8th Graders is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14th from 6-9 p.m. at the CSULB Student Union.

The 8th Grade Committee needs your donations by Monday, April 4th to make it happen! A flyer went home to all 8th graders explaining the event along with how you can help to support the effort. This will be a glow-in-the-dark themed, parent supervised event with a mac-and-cheese bar, tater tot bar, candy bar, live DJ, dancing, bowling, billiards, shuffleboard, air hockey, a photo booth, and MORE! You can link to the donation portal specifically for 8th Grade events on the image to the right at the PTA store or use the link hereA suggested donation of $25 per 8th Grade student is requested to cover the costs of the event for ALL 8th graders – to date the committee has already raised over $1500 thanks to the generosity of 32 families … but they still have a ways to go to meet their event fundraising goal – DONATE TODAY!

Operation Easter Basket is returning to Rogers March 28-April 8! Rogers Middle School will be joining forces with Justin Rudd to fill Easter baskets for children of families in need. This is our 13th year participating in the event and we are excited to make a difference in our community. We are collecting for ages 0-16. If you can help us spread some spring cheer, the following items would be appreciated:

Hygiene Items | (Preferably full sized) soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, bubble bath,  toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, nail polish, nail file, hand sanitizer, hair accessories, face wash, razors, shaving cream, hair ties, loofa, diapers, baby shampoo, baby powder, baby bottles, and hair brushes.

New Toys | Cars, balls (all sports), small Lego sets, playing cards, yo-yos, slinky, Easter toys, jump ropes, small stuffed animals, and plastic baseball bat sets.

The nominating committee met on Tuesday, February 1st at 6:00pm to consider all eligible candidates for the 2022 – 2023 term. The Bylaws, standing rules and California State PTA Toolkit was consulted by the committee for each candidate’s qualifications and consideration.

The following Slate of Officers is presented to the association as follows:

CALL FOR DONATIONS Want to help out by donating needed items for events coming up at Rogers?

  • NEXT WEEK Tuesday March 8th is International Women’s Day, and Student Council is seeking donations of purple flower bouquets and single flowers. Items are DUE TUESDAY MARCH 8TH 9 a.m. at the Front Office. Sign-Up Genius Link for International Women’s Day March 8th Event
  • Monday March 14th the 7th Grade Class is having a Pi Day Reciting Contest, and Student Council is in need of full- and mini-size pie donations. Pies should be dropped off to the Front office by Monday Morning March 14th 9 a.m. Please remember for food donations, per LBUSD guidelines items must be store- or bakery-bought (no homemade items). Sign-Up Genius Link for Pi Day-March 14th Event
  • SAVE THE DATE! Operation Easter Basket is returning to Rogers March 28-April 14! Donations needed will include hygiene items, new toys, new school supplies, food, and essential clothing. The donation period will open sometime later this month, and a flyer with specifics will be shared once it becomes available. We are looking for prize donations! Prizes are important for the Mustang Drive to be a success. If you own a local business that can donate prizes or know of someone that does, please contact Michelle Zimmerman-Getchius, Moltibaci27@gmail.com. Businesses that participate will be recognized on our Mustang Drive website page.

A reminder that there will be standing, weekly meet-ups via ZOOM Thursdays at 5 p.m. up through to the day-of the event. To get the ZOOM link please contact Chair Mary Loos, maryzerafa@gmail.com or 562 754-2500.

8th Grade Committee UPDATES The end-of-year celebration for all Rogers 8th Graders is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14th from 6-9 p.m. at CSULB. A flyer went home last week to all 8th graders explaining the event along with how you can help to support the effort! You can also link to the donation portal specifically for 8th Grade events at the PTA store here. A suggested donation of $25 per 8th Grade student has been requested to cover the costs of the event for ALL 8th graders.

Want to help with planning or just learn what’s happening so far? Stay tuned for more info on the next 8th Grade Committee Meeting scheduled for early April before Spring Break!

In the meantime, please consider helping with these specific areas in need of volunteers, as follows: 

  • Food & drinks
  • Candy Bar
  • Photo Booth
  • Decorations
  • Entertainment (DJ/other)
  • Advertising/ Social Media

VIPS | APPLY NOW! If you are interested in becoming a VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) for Rogers Middle School and you no longer have an active VIPS badge for our school site (it has expired), only have a badge for another site (previous elementary, etc.), or never have been processed as a VIPS with LBUSD, please email Karina Vasquez in the school’s front office at kvasquez@lbschools.net to start the application process.

Please note that only current Rogers VIPS will be able to help with on campus school day events (this includes the Mustang Drive fundraiser). For this reason, it is important for those interested to start the application process as soon as possible as VIPS applications may take several weeks to process and finalize. Teacher of the Year 2022 | Nominations Due April 4th Long Beach Council PTA annually honors an outstanding teacher from the LBUSD. Parents or students, please consider nominating an outstanding Rogers teacher, one who implements creative and innovative ideas that enrich the learning experience of our Rogers students.

Nominations are due by April 4th 5 p.m. Nomination form HERE with instructions how to submit entries enclosed. The winner of the Long Beach Council PTA Teacher of the Year Award will be presented with a $300 classroom grant and will be recognized at the Long Beach Council PTA Luncheon held in June. Submit your entries NOW!


 

we need your help clip art sign displayPTA ONLINE STORE COORDINATOR WANTED! PTA is seeking a volunteer to handle its online store, which offers items such as the Rogers sweatshirts, PE uniforms, memberships, banner sponsorships, and other specific activity donation collection portals.

The ideal person should be tech savvy, and experience with Square or Weebly would be helpful. Tasks include creating new items as needed, coordinating with the financial secretary to make sure categories match budget line items, updating inventory as needed, and generating sales reports each month.

As this work is typically done online and off campus and apart from students and staff, you do not require VIPS clearance to fill this position. If you are interested in this volunteer position, please email rogersmiddleschoolpta@gmail.com (Subject: PTA Online Store Coordinator Position)
